Rupee's makeup altered to stop coins being melted for scrap

Vanishing coins, a symptom of devaluation, is not limited to Western economies.

“In the new brass-nickel, five-rupee coins, the percentage of nickel has been scaled down, to make it less attractive for the criminals. The new ferritic stainless steel one and two-rupee coins are lighter than they used to be. Melting these new coins will not be lucrative at all,” Mr Gandhi said.
