Greece: big, bad numbers

Greece’s fiscal problems are huge, but have been amplified because nobody can trust the numbers it produces.

Since when are skewed statistics a problem? A historical study of US CPI, employment, or GDP will produce a similar conclusion. Or, is it just that some countries hide their chicanery better than others?
